Frequently Asked Questions
What is a height percentile?
A height percentile shows how your baby's height (or length) compares to other babies of the same age and sex. For example, if your baby is in the 60th percentile for height, they are taller than 60% of babies their age and shorter than 40%. Percentiles between the 5th and 95th are generally considered within the normal range.
What's the difference between length and height?
Length is measured while the child is lying down (recumbent) and is used for children under 2 years old. Height is measured while standing and is used for children 2 years and older. Length measurements are typically about 0.7 cm longer than height due to the different positions. The WHO standards account for this difference.
What are WHO Child Growth Standards?
The World Health Organization (WHO) Child Growth Standards describe normal child growth from birth to 5 years under optimal environmental conditions. They are based on a study of approximately 8,500 children from diverse ethnic backgrounds and cultural settings. These standards are the international benchmark used by pediatricians worldwide.
Should I be worried if my baby is short or tall?
Not necessarily! Height is largely determined by genetics. What matters most is that your baby follows their own growth curve consistently over time. A baby who consistently tracks at the 20th percentile with tall parents might be perfectly healthy, just as one at the 90th. Sudden changes in percentile are what pediatricians watch for.
